Basic Installation

NOTE:  The approximate amount of time necessary will vary, usually from 1-3 hours.  Make certain to give yourself plenty of time to finish before dark or inclement weather.  Dealing with either of those circumstances will make for a very unpleasant project.  If you are unsure of some of the terms or techniques used you may want to hire a professional.

  1. Remove the old door and clean any debris from the mounting area.

  2. Determine the hinge side of the door and stand it on edge, lengthwise, with the side to be hinged facing up.  If your door is pre-hung skip step 3.

  3. The hinges are installed so as to allow for 1/8" clearance above the top of the door.  The lip edge of the hinges fit under the lip edge on the side rail of the storm door.  This will put the weatherstripping of the hinge z-bar assembly to the inside of the door. Fasten the hinges by beginning at the top of the door and drilling (1/8" drill bit) and fastening one screw in the pre-punched holes on the hinge to hold the z-bar in place. Double check the alignment and orientation of the hinges, then proceed with the remainder of the screws.

  4. Measure the height of the opening where the z-bar will be installed.

  5. Cut both z-bars to size with the hacksaw.

  6. Put the door in the opening and push in and up toward the top of the hinged side to keep the door tight to the jamb. With the door tight to the jamb install ONLY 2 of the white installation screws.  One near the top and one near the middle.

  7. Use the level to check the door. NOTE: The door may be level but the opening may not.

  8. Once the door is level and swings unobstructed to a closed position, install the plain side z-bar with 2 screws. Check that the space between the door and plain side z-bar is even from top to bottom. (Approximately 1/8" - 1/4")

  9. Place the header tight to the jamb above the door and fasten with 1 screw for now.

  10. Check that the door swings open and closed unobstructed and that the door will close evenly against the plain side z-bar. If this is OK, install the installation screws to the side JAMB first, then the remainder of the exterior installation screws. Do not overtighten.

  11. Adjust the bottom expander as necessary.

  12. Install the hardware per the manufacturers directions.
