There are many things to consider when measuring for a storm door.  Here we will offer information for the most common standard openings only.  It is recommended that you consult with an industry professional if your opening is very different or you are unsure of the terms or techniques discussed here.

Determine the size of your opening.

  1. Measure the width between the wood casing.  Measure at the top, middle, and bottom.  Use the smallest dimension.  This is your opening width.

  2. Measure the height from the top casing down to the threshold where the storm door will close.  Measure the left side, middle, and right side. Use the smallest dimension.  This is your opening height.

  3. Now you will need to determine the depth of the casing.  This will tell you which Z-Bar type is required for your opening.  To do this, measure from the outer edge of the casing in to the stop.

This will usually be 1 1/8" Western or 3/4" Eastern.

  4. Next, determine the hinge side of the storm door.  To do this you begin by looking at the door from the outside.  If the hinges are on the left, order your door as pre-hung Left (PHL).  If the hinges are on the right, order your door as pre-hung Right (PHR).
